Search Marketing Company: The Pope Has Started Tweeting

January 8, 2013 - Digital State Marketing

Here at Digital State Marketing we specialise in SEO services and internet marketing and as a search marketing company we make time to observe news and developments following social media and internet marketing. We recently heard of Pope Benedict stepping into the 21st century as he sends his first tweet, from his official twitter account. Given the popularity of the pope his account has been split in 8 different languages this means he can reach out to his followers in different corners of the world. The tweets will be sent out in Spanish, English, Italian, Portuguese, German, Polish, Arabic and French and other languages are to be added soon.

The Pope claims that he will be tweeting as often as he wants and will mostly respond to questions about faith. His username ‘@pontifex’ has symbolic significance as it means both pope and bridge builder in Latin.

The pope has publicly welcomed social media and when streamed on television, a somewhat humorous scene evolved n Vatican City as the pope appeared have difficulty operating the ipad tablet, someone soon stepped into help. Pope Benedict still writes his speeches by hand.

The Archbishop of Canterbury and other senior members of the Anglican Church are supposedly following suit and will be tweeting their Christmas day sermons for the first time this year.

The pope is clearly a popular man and he has had over one million followers before he even sent out his first tweet and within 10 days of setting up his account. He now has in the region of one point two billion followers. The Pope won’t be sending the tweets himself but he will be making decisions regarding their content.

On the subject of social media, last year, the pope suggested ‘the possibilities of new media and social networks offered “a great opportunity”, but he also warned of the risks of depersonalization, alienation, self-indulgence, and the dangers of having more virtual friends than real ones.’

Here at Digital State Marketing we are pleased to see the elderly Pope Benedict embracing modern media and social media to reach his supporters.
