Search Marketing: Google Doodles

March 22, 2012 - Digital State Marketing

Search marketing is an essential tool, if you are trying to attract as much traffic as possible to your website. One of the biggest search engines in the UK is Google, but have you ever been greeted with a fabulously decorated Google logo when you are searching the web? These special designs have been named Google Doodles. The search engine giants include various modifications and humorous features, such as cartoon modifications of their logo for use on holidays such as Christmas, New Year, Easter and Halloween and also for birthdays of famous figures from the past including scientists, artists and novelists such as Andy Warhol, Albert Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci, John Lennon, Michael Jackson, and major events like the up and coming Olympic Games.

The first Google Doodle was in honour of the Burning Man Festival of 1998. The doodle was designed by Larry Page and Sergey Brin at Google to notify users of their absence in case the servers crashed. Subsequent Google Doodles were designed by an outside contractor, until Larry and Sergey asked the then intern Dennis Hwang to design a logo for Bastille Day in 2000. Hwang has been designing the Google Doodles ever since. On Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011, Google ran one of its most interactive Doodles in honour of Sci-Fi writer Jules Verne’s 183rd birthday, viewers were able to pull on a virtual lever which allowed them to get a Nautilus submarine’s view undersea of everything from divers to treasure to sea creatures, including a coral formation in the shape of the logo. On April 15th 2011, Google displayed the first video Google Doodle, commemorating Charlie Chaplin’s 122nd birthday. This doodle was a black and white YouTube video that, when clicked upon, started playing before redirecting to the usual Google search featuring the doodle’s special occasion.
